Air cleaning is used widely in hospitals and clean rooms to filter out contaminants in the air down to the very smallest sizes.
Air cleaners do not replace the requirement for ventilation with fresh outside air as they neither bring in oxygen nor usually remove potentially harmful gases such as carbon monoxide. Their main role is to remove the particles from the air, making it more comfortable for the occupants.
Air cleaners work by drawing air through one or more filters. As the air moves through the filters some of the particles stick to them and so are taken out of the air. Each time that the air passes through the filters the proportion of particles left in the air reduces. However, as the filters become more and more full of particles so the equipment becomes less effective. Filters therefore require regular replacement or cleaning.
