Lighting
It may be fine to go without light in the summer months but come Winter the nights will get darker earlier. So that your customers are not standing in darkness think about installing simple lights to make the area more welcoming and safer. Be aware that light pollution is something Environmental Health must consider to prevent neighbours being bothered – so be sensible about the amount, brightness and colour of the lights you use.
Just as with heating, think about using sensors so that the area is only lit when customers are using it.
Landscaping and Décor
A few finishing touches can make all the difference - turning a utilitarian space into a pleasant and attractive place to be. Painting a solid shelter to match the inside of your premises can help it blend in and complement the internal colours. Whilst a well tended garden, or even a few hanging baskets or planters will soften the appearance of shelters and make them more appealing to all customers.
Entertainment
For premises with no neighbours close by and a substantial, and secure, outdoor area, it is worth considering adding extra facilities to attract customers in.
In Ireland pool tables, TVs and even games machines have been installed in beer gardens and smoking shelters as well as piped music. Though this isn’t something to include if your garden is overlooked by flats and houses, if you have the opportunity it could be great for business.
