Specifying Air Cleaners

With the wide range of air cleaners on the market, manufacturers tend to specify their own equipment in their own way. There is no obvious and recognised standard that is widely used.

An emerging standard is that the air cleaners should be able to remove 99.9% of particles from a space within one hour. This enables purchasers to compare the systems with each other and ‘mix and match’ what they want.

At a more basic level the number of units can easily be changed until the staff and consumers are comfortable. Air cleaners should be sited:

    1. On the ceiling or wall close to the area of heaviest smoking

    2. Away from beams or corners, so that the air can circulate around them freely

    3. Only in smoking areas as they may drag smoke in to the non-smoking area if they are placed there.

    4. On ceilings that are no higher than 4m.
